You guys ever hear a new song that immediately reminds you of another song, but you can’t place what that song it reminds you of is? It’s like musical deja vu. Today’s phenomenon is brought to you by Toronto dream pop outfit Alvvays. “In Undertow” is the first single from the band’s second album Antisocialites, and as far as I can tell, it’s a perfect blend of reverb heavy aesthetics and sadboi lyrics (albeit sung by a girl). There’s something about this that sounds like either the theme song to The Adventures of Pete and Pete or that Tiffany song from the 80s, but I don’t mean either in a bad way. I dig the ethereal vibes to this, especially in the chorus that says, “There’s no turning back // after what’s transpired,” because yeah, I get it, there’s no turning back, fam. Throw this on your summer playlist immediately and get real introspective.
Antisocialites is out September 8th via Polyvinyl Records.
